A brand new Sunday school year is right around the corner. We are excited because we are implementing a brand new curriculum and a new approach in our Sunday school for the older children. And, we trust that these new efforts will help greatly in the Christian education and faith formation of our children.
Why are we switching to a new curriculum?
We live in a world of unbelievable changes. Our world has become a
global community and we experience great cultural shifts because of
rapid technological advances all over the world. According to one
Sunday school teacher and author, The current culture is rewiring
the kids' brains
and the way they learn. The explosion of
technology is a challenge to small churches and Sunday schools such as
ours.
While we cannot realistically compete at the cutting edge
technology of today, neither can we afford to ignore the environment
to which most of our children are exposed daily. The Bible also
teaches us that we must adjust our methods of instruction to suit the
hearers in 1 Corinthians 9:19-22. Therefore, we are moving to a new
curriculum to effect the change. By using the same teaching approaches
that the children are used to, we hope to enable them to grow in
spiritual dimensions more readily.
Why did we select Power Express?
Most Sunday school organizations have recognized the need for change and have developed appropriate curricula. PowerXpress is one such curriculum, marketed by Cokesbury.
Power Express is based on rotational approach, one of the popular approaches used in many main line churches. We have customized this curriculum further to suit our church and Sunday school.
Power Express is also based on the The theory of multiple
intelligences
by Harvard Psychologist Howard Gardner. His theory
asserts that, Each person is a unique creation. We all possess
multiple intelligences, but these intelligences work together
differently in every person. There are many ways in which we
synthesize and digest information.
Power Express employs a unique
blend of these intelligences to promote learning by all children.
How does this work?
Typically, a same Bible story or spiritual concept is taught for several weeks using different workshops or teaching methods. The popular workshops are music, story-telling, drama, games, arts, creative cookery, computers, and videos. Thus the children experience God's word in a variety of ways.
Teachers are invited to teach one class during the seminar based on their interests and skill sets. Thus we celebrate the unique and special gifts of our members for the benefit of our Sunday school children.
The approach includes shorter but focused lessons, experience-based lessons, teaching the same truths repeatedly using various means, and incorporating the use of media and technology to the extent possible.
Power Express is used in the class for children ages 6 to 12.
